Steven Gangbar is SAM Communications

For over 20 years I've helped organizations leverage best-in-class strategic communications to advance their business goals. I have experience across the range of public affairs and communications functions, with an emphasis on digital communications - the platforms, processes and cultures that enable organizations to communicate, listen, and engage.

From the development of websites to the design of social media and digital marketing programs, from content marketing activation to digital workplace transformations, from content strategy and development to employee communications and change management, I help organizations advance their brand, reputation, marketing, communication, public and stakeholder affairs and employee engagement goals.

The path to SAM

I began my career at PricewaterhouseCoopers where I worked at internal communications and executive speechwriting – while at the same time completing my PhD in Literature. The academic skills I developed  – critical thinking, problem solving,  sound judgment and decision-making, cognitive flexibility – shaped my approach to being a communicator and advocate for employees and a thoughtful strategist, influencer and collaborator. SAM Communications represents the culmination of a career in corporate communications, working for some of the biggest brands in Canadian financial and professional services.

I first became entrenched in digital communications at Scotiabank, where I developed and managed its global Intranet. I also worked as a member of its M&A team, having responsibility for assessing cultures of target organizations, supporting transaction announcements, and onboarding and integrating new employees. SAM Communications represents the culmination of a career in corporate communications, working for some of the biggest brands in Canadian financial and professional services.

At Sun Life Financial I led its Intranet program, launched its first internal social business platform and designed and led its first social media program.

At CPP Investment Board I developed its first overall digital communications program – comprising its web and social media strategies, its Intranet and collaboration programs, its digital marketing initiatives and thought leadership program, along with the processes, governance, and cultural underpinnings foundational to a digital-first approach to communications.

Over time, these two areas - employee communications and digital communications - embodied what I took to be foundational to all communications, and for which I became most passionate about: that effective communication rests on a deep understanding of the experiences and needs and interests of the people with whom one is engaging. A radical empathy.​

It is this principle that governs the work of SAM Communications. Our focus on leveraging digital capabilities - data, user experience principles, psychology, cultural context - to engage in meaningful, authentic conversations that enlighten, persuade, excite, and inspire.
